We want to provide you with an important update regarding the black bear sighting reported in our area yesterday.

We have been in communication with the Flat Rock Police Department, who is consults with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Additionally, we consulted with superintendents from northern Michigan districts who have experience handling similar situations.

As a result, outdoor recess will proceed as normally scheduled. As always, staff will actively supervise students, staying mobile and keeping children within close proximity.

The safety of our students remains our highest priority. At the same time, we aim to approach this situation calmly and thoughtfully. Wildlife sightings are not uncommon in Michigan communities and there is no immediate threat to the school. Black bears are generally shy animals that tend to avoid human interaction whenever possible.

For your convenience, we are also sharing black bear safety tips and resources provided by neighboring Downriver communities to help raise awareness and promote precautions.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in ensuring the safety and well-being of our students.
